Climate change impacts on winter chill in Mediterranean temperate fruit orchards

چکیده

Abstract Temperate trees require low temperatures during winter and subsequent warm conditions in early spring to flower eventually bear fruit. Many parts of the Mediterranean region feature winters with sometimes marginal chill accumulation. To assess historic future agroclimatic for cultivating temperate (including almonds, pistachios, apricots, sweet cherries apples), we mapped throughout this important growing region. We used on-site weather records (1974–2020) calibrate a generator produced data scenarios. broaden our analysis, spatially interpolated whole basin. supplemented simulation outcomes by collecting expert knowledge (from farmers researchers) regarding observed climate change impacts on orchards as well risks concerns generated change. Results showed that northern African regions have experienced major losses, likely cause irregular delayed bloom highlighted experts. The same regions, together southern Europe, may lose up 30 Chill Portions 2050 under moderate warming scenario. For future, experts foresee increasing risk frost early-blooming cultivars, exacerbated bloom-related problems occurrence heat waves. Our results provide evidence orchards. Expert proved instrumental interpreting orienting adaptation strategies. present are useful orchard managers planning new plantings, researchers policy makers developing strategies adapt fruit

Climate Change Affects Winter Chill for Temperate Fruit and Nut Trees

BACKGROUND Temperate fruit and nut trees require adequate winter chill to produce economically viable yields. Global warming has the potential to reduce available winter chill and greatly impact crop yields. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We estimated winter chill for two past (1975 and 2000) and 18 future scenarios (mid and end 21st century; 3 Global Climate Models [GCMs]; 3 greenhouse gas e...

Potential climate change impacts on temperate forest ecosystem processes

Large changes in atmospheric CO2, temperature, and precipitation are predicted by 2100, yet the long-term consequences for carbon (C), water, and nitrogen (N) cycling in forests are poorly understood. We applied the PnET-CN ecosystem model to compare the long-term effects of changing climate and atmospheric CO2 on productivity, evapotranspiration, runoff, and net nitrogen mineralization in curr...

Evidences of Impacts of Climate Change on Mediterranean Biota

We report here the data set entitled " Impacts of climate change on organisms in the Mediterranean Sea, " which is the basis for the analysis of impacts of climate change on marine organisms presented by Marbà et al. (2015a). (Marbà et al., 2015b). In this data set we compiled evidence of warming on Mediterranean Sea biota derived from published reports. These were derived from a broad literatu...
